I have wanted an excuse to make a festive balloon inspired by the ones made by Geronimo for some time now and I decided Valentine' was a great opportunity to try one out. I was thinking this would be a great way to present a hand made Valentine card to someone by attaching it to the "string" on the balloon.
what you need:
- 36 inch round balloon
- tissue paper (I created about 6 tassels for this balloon using 2 sheets of tissue for each)
- 5 feet of ribbon plus additional 2 feet to be used to attach tassels
- any other decorative elements you might want to add keeping in mind that they are lightweight so they do not pull the balloon down- I used foam heart cut outs.
- tape ribbon with painters tape onto a wall so that you can attach tassels and get a feel for how it will look once it is actually tied to the balloon.
- create tassels or other decorative elements, you can see my tutorial on creating tissue fringe tassels here.
- attach tassels starting at the top of your ribbon by tying them around the main ribbon with a smaller strip of the same ribbon so that it blends in.
- Once you are happy with the look of your balloon's string, attach it to the inflated balloon.(sidenote- these balloons take A LOT of helium and most stores will charge you extra to fill them up. Also keep in mind that unless you have a huge SUV you will probably only be able to fit a maximum of 3 of these in your car at a time if you choose to make a bunch...)
I really loved how this project turned out and could see this being a wonderful addition to an engagement shoot, bridal/baby shower, or birthday party.
I LOVE this! Such a fun way to add a balloon element to any party!

I love this! Have had this on my to do list for a while now also.
ReplyDeleteDo you think shreds of a lightweight fabric would be too heavy on the balloon? How much was the balloon to fill?
How cute would it be if given as a gift in a big box?!
@katie jo
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of putting it in a box!!!
Yes- i think lightweight fabric would be too heavy unless it was like a verrrrry lightweight silk or tulle. And this cost me $5 to fill, but I took to a random party store in Downtown LA who actually sells these balloons so they understand how much helium they take. If you take to a Ralphs/Albertsons they might not charge you that much since they might not know how much helium it really takes.
